Great performances at the Mary Doyle Memorial 5k race

The 3rd promotion of the Mary Doyle Memorial 5k took place in glorious sunshine in New Inn last Saturday night and it was brilliant to see present and former Club members taking part in this event, as Mary was held in high esteem by everyone for her trojan work in the Club over the years. Mary was heavily involved in the juvenile side of the Club, and it was fitting that one of our juvenile athletes, Daragh Boland, was our first athlete across the finishing line last Saturday night. Daragh ran a well-judged race when finishing 3rd in a very good time of 18 mins 46 secs. Due to Covid the last promotion of this event took place in 2019. Angela McCann once again produced a great performance when winning the women’s race in 19 mins 4 secs when finishing 6th overall, which was a good improvement on her 2019 run of 19:30. On Saturday night last she was pushed all the way by another of our juvenile athletes, Muireann Duffy who was 2nd woman in 19 mins 6 secs. Eddy O Donoghue also ran very well when finishing 8th in 19 mins 28 secs. Then we had Ruby Carroll finishing 3rd woman in 19 mins 28 secs, a significant improvement on her 2019 run of 20:34 and a clean sweep by the Club. We also had great performances from athletes like Donal Ryan 10th 19:31, Peter Kiely 12th in 20:14, Pat Coffey 13th in 20:22. Alan Casey winning the Junior men’s award when finishing 15th in 20:53, John Walshe 16th in 20:56, Michelle Doherty 23rd in 21:23, Michael Ryan 28th in 22:39, Eimear Heafey also ran very well when winning the Junior women’s prize in 22:48 and a major improvement on her 2019 run of 23:20, Niall Brannigan 34th in 22:57, Caroline O Donoghue 48th in 24:32, Helen O Ceallaigh 51st in 24:59 and a massive improvement on her 2019 run of 28:34, Niall O Ceallaigh 52nd in 24:59, John Laste 54th in 25:17, improving on his 2019 performance of 29:07, Ned O Brien 56th in 25:29, Lily Casey 59th in 25:53, Donna Nagle 76th in 28:07, Carmel Delaney 78th in 28:10, Noel Howley 81st in 28:24, Aoife McGrath 84th in 29:07 and our Club Chairman Frank Lynch 104th in 43:11.
