Great performances at the County Juvenile Cross Country Championships
Moycarkey Coolcroo promoted the County Juvenile Even age groups from under 10 to under 18 at the Turnpike in glorious sunshine and it was great to see so many club athletes competing. In the Girls under 10 race we had great performances for our team of Zoe Tierney 18th, Rachel Buckley 22nd, Gabrielle Heslop 28th, Hazel McCann 31st and Siofra O Loughlin 35th. These athletes were having their first outing at this level and all performed very well when finishing 5th team. In the Boys under 10 race we also had some great performances. Matthew Downy ran a great race when winning the Bronze medal. Then we had great running from Fred Perry 6th, Killian Whelan 19th, Ben Phillips 23rd, Max Fitzgerald 32nd, Louis Carroll 33rd and Darragh O Gorman 45th. This team combined very well to win the Silver medals.
In the Girls under 12 race Ruby Carroll ran very well when finishing 5th and she was closely followed home by Jane O Donnell 9th, Eimear Heafey 27th and Isobel O Donnell 35th and they combined to finish 4th in the team event . In the boys under 12 we had some great performances. Odhran McGrath ran a great race when winning the Bronze medal and we also had some great efforts from Cian Flaherty 12th, Harry O Keeffe 14th, Michael Ahearne 20th, Michael O Reilly 24th, Conor O Gorman 25th, Sam O Sullivan 27th, Cianan Power 28th, Kieran Proven 32nd, Cathal O Gorman 35th and Matthew Buckley 42nd. This squad combined very well to win the Gold medals.
In the Girls under 14 we had a Gold medal team winning performances made up of great performances from Gillian Hughes 8th, Muireann Duffy 9th, Celine Durand 13th and Rose Flaherty 18th. They won the Gold medal on countback form Newport with Rose Flaherty finishing ahead of the Newport AC 4th scorer, oh so close. In the Boys under 14 we also had good performances with the quartet combining very well to win the Bronze medals with performances like Conor Flaherty 14th, Oscar Quigley 16th, Robert Larkin 18th and Keelan Hanrahan 19th.
In the Girls under 16 race we had great performances all round. Here we had Siobhan Whelan running very well to win the Silver medal and hot on her heels was Molly Keane to win the Bronze medal. These fine performances spurred on the rest of the athletes with Ava Fennessy finishing 4th, Elma Casey 7th, Caoimhe Maunsell 8th, Brid Moynihan 12th, Bebhinn Nolan 13th and Roisin Nolan 14th. These athletes combined very well to win the Gold and Silver team medals. It is great to have so many athletes competing in this age group. In the Boys under 16 race we had two athletes competing and they performed very well with Daniel Slattery coming through over the closing stages to win the Bronze medal. Stephen O Leary also ran very well when finishing 7th.
In the Girls under 18 race we also had some great performances most notably Ciara O Neill who put in a great effort over the closing stages to win the Silver medal. We also had good performances from Moya Whelan 4th, Lucy O Donnell 6th, Courtney McGuire 7th and Katelin McGrath 9th. These athletes combined very well to win the Gold medals. In the Boys under 18 race T J Quigley ran a brilliant race when winning the Silver medal. We also had Riain Patterson making his Club debut in these Championship and he too should be very pleased with his performance, finishing 7th and is sure to improve as the year progresses. Overall it was a great day for the Club and great credit to all the athletes and coaches for all the training over the past few weeks. It was also great to see so many parents coming along and helping out, such help is always appreciated and augurs well for the future.

Boys under 10 – County Champions
The County Juvenile Cross Country relays took place last Sunday at the Thurles Crokes complex. Here our under 10 Girls team, of which some of them were having their first taste of this competition ran well when finishing 10th. Our under 10 Boys team surprised everyone with a brilliant team effort when winning the Gold medals. Our Girls under 12 team finished 10th while our Boys under 12 team were a close 4th and our B team were 9th. In the Girls under 14 event our team were a very close 4th. Then in the Mixed relays under 16 our A team won the Bronze medals while our B team were 5th. This is a great competition and there was a great atmosphere at it.

Fantastic performances at the County Juvenile Cross Country Championship
On Sunday 16th October 2016 Moyglass promoted the County Juvenile Uneven Age group from U9 to U19 and the club already leading the county points table sent a strong team to compete and they didn’t disappoint. First off were the girls U9 and we had three girls competing Zoe Tierney placed 4th, Erin O’ Keeffe placed 24th and Kate Downey 50th. In the U9 boys we had Fred Perry placed 2nd, Charlie Philips placed 26th, Darragh O’Gorman placed 29th and Darragh Boland placed 37th. These lads combined to finish 5th in the team event.
Next were the U11 girls and we had Eimear Heafy placed 11th, Cara Hennessey placed 14th, Ciara Collins 25th and Isobel O’ Donnell placed 29th. These girls combined to finish 4th in the team event only narrowly missing out on a medal by 5 points. Then we had the U11 boys, here we 15 entries leading out for Clonmel was Harry O’ Keeffe placed
3rd closely followed by Conor O’ Gorman 4th, Cian Flaherty 6th, Cathal O’ Gorman 14th, Michael O’ Reilly 16th,Matthew Downey 17th, Kieran Proven 21st, Jamie O’ Keeffe 24th, Cianan Power 30th, Matthew Buckley 31st, PatrickMcGarry 35th, Owen Quigley 38th, Louis Carroll 41st, Max Fitzgerald 44th, Ben Philips 46th. The first 4 lads home on the team combined to be crowned County Champions.
Next up were the U13 girls and Clonmel had 7 competitors Muireann Duffy 6th, Jane O’ Donnell 7th, Ruby Carroll 10th,Saoirse Davis 13th, Meadbh Mulcahy 24th, Celine Durand 25th, and Niamh Ryan 34th. Here again the first 4 girls home combined to be crowned County Champions.
In the U13 boys we had 3 competitors Ordhan McGrath 12th,Alan Quigley 24th and Conor Flaherty 25th.
In the U15 girls Clonmel had 8 competitors Siobhan Whelan 5th, Gillian Hughes 8th, Molly Keane 9th, Caoimhe Mulcahy 10th, Brid Moynihan 15th, Raise Flaherty 16th, Aoibhinn Daly 17th and Bebhinn Nolan 18th. Clonmel placed 2nd and 4th in the team event only missing out on top spot by 4 points. Next up was the U15 boys with Oscar Quigley 16th, John John Carolan 17th, and Robert Larkin 18th. The boys combined for 5th place in the team event.
Then came the U17 girls and here we had Moya Whelan 2nd, Elma Casey 3rd, Caoimhe Mansell 6th and Roisin Nolan 10th and for the third time today Clonmel were crowned County Champions. In the U17 boys we had 2 teams TJ Quigley 2nd, Colm McCarthy 6th, and Daniel Slattery 9th this team finished 2nd. Rian Patterson 10th, Benoit Durand 15th, Oisin Barry 18th and this team finished 4th.
The final event of the County Juvenile Race Calendar for Clonmel athletes was the U19 girls and we had both Individual County Champion in Ciara O’ Neill and team County Champions with Lucy O’ Donnell in 5th and Courtney McGuire 6th.
Overall it was a fantastic club performance over both county championships with great credit due to athletes, coaches and parents for their continued support of Clonmel AC. In total Clonmel had 1 Individual County Champion and 9 Team County Champions, an impressive tally of medals. Next event up is the Munster Even Age group championships and the club has no doubt that our athletes will continue to make us proud.

Great Performances at Munster Cross Country Carraignavar
Carraignavar hosted the Munster Even Age Group Cross Country Championship on Sunday 23rd October on an almost perfect day for cross country running. The course was in excellent condition for the girls and boys who travelled from Clonmel to represent their Club and County.
First off was the girls U10 and here we had Cara Hennessey running in only her 2nd cross county for Clonmel and put in a spirited race when finishing 44th making her 5th Tipperary athlete home on the county team. Unfortunately Tipperary finished fourth. Next off were the boys U10 team in a race that had the highest attendance of the championship of nearly 200 athletes. Again the team was lead out by Matthew Downey placed 35th with team members Killian Whelan placed 101st, Louis Carroll 108th, Ben Philips 113th and Max Fitzgerald 128th. Matthew was the third Tipperary athlete home but here again Tipperary were just outside the medals placing 4th. The Clonmel team placed 14th.
In the girls U12 Ruby Carroll was the sole Clonmel athlete and ran a brilliant race to place 34th and 5th on the County team which earned the bronze medals and a qualifying place in the All Ireland CC Championship later this year. Then came the U12 boys and Clonmel had 2 athletes competing Odhran McGrath finished 22nd and Michael Ahearne 84th. Odhran was just outside the Tipperary team which were crowned Munster Champions.
Next up were the girls U14 and here Gillian Hughes put in a fine display of Cross Country running to place 39th and make the county team which again took the bronze medals and a qualifying place for the Nationals. In the girls U16 Clonmel had 4 competitors Siobhan Whelan placing 17th, Molly Keane placing 39th, Elma casey placing 53rd and Brid Moynihan placing 59th. Although Siobhan lead the county team home, Tipperary were just outside the medals placing 4th. The Clonmel team placed 5th in the Club competition. In the boys U16 race Daniel Slattery put in a solid display of cross country running to cross the line in 38th position and 3rd Tipperary athlete home helping the county team to a 4th place finish.
In the girls U18 both Ciara O’Neill and Moya Whelan ran a great race to finish 22nd and 34th respectively. Unfortunately Tipperary could not field a team as only 5 Tipperary athletes started. This was a pity as no county took the bronze medals in this event. In the final race of the day for the juveniles TJ Quigley placed 18th with a determined run racing against athletes with International pedigree. Other team members also finished well with Colm McCarthy placing 30th and Riain Patterson placing 40th. It was regrettable that Tipperary again only had 5 athletes competing.
A great day’s competition had by all with great credit to the athletes, coaches and parents for their support of the club.
Clonmel Juvenile Athletic Club Notes 28th October
Great competition at the South Tipperary Primary Schools Cross Country competition
Clonmel Athletic Club along with Carrick on Suir, Rosegreen, Moyglass and Coolquill Athletic Clubs organised a very successful Primary Schools Cross Country competition in the Marlfield GAA grounds on the 26th October where conditions were ideal. The Clubs would like to thank Marlfield GAA Club for the use of their fine facilities in a beautiful setting. This event has grown in stature since 2001 when 398 athletes attended our first event in Clonmel Og complex where last week in Marlfield we had an entry of over 1440 athletes. The Clubs would like to thank all the teachers and school principals for such support.
We were delighted to have teams from Presentation Convent Carrick on Suir, Crehana, Rossmore, Lisronagh, Templeorum, St Michael’s School, Tipperary Town, Owning, Ballylooby, Burncourt, New Inn Boys School, Golden, New Inn Girls School, Grange, Presentation Convent Clonmel, Newcastle, Gael Scoil Carrig na Suire, Carrick on Suir CBS, Killurney, Kilcash, Powerstown, St Peter’s and Paul’s Clonmel, Holy Trinity School, Fethard, St Mary’s Parochial School, Ballingarry, St Oliver’s, Sisters of Charity, Ballyneale, Clogheen, Poulacapple, St Mary’s Clonmel, Gael Scoil Cluain Meala, Clerihan, Skeheenarinky, Moyglass, Rosegreen, Kilvemnon, Ballydrehid, Kilvemnon, Ballinure and Kilsheelan, there were in total 40 schools competing. There were races for 3rd and 4th Classes and 5th and 6th Classes in all six categories, based on pupil numbers with all pupils from each school scoring valuable points for the overall competition. In the end the overall best schools in each competition were presented with a Shield and here are this year’s overall school winners: Killurney National School won both the John Quirke Perpetual Shield for the Best Girls School and the Tony Ryan Perpetual Shield for the best overall Boys School in the Small Schools group 1 competition. Rossmore National School was the winner of the Vincent Fox Perpetual Shield for the Best Girls Small Schools Group 2 competition. Templeorum National School and Kilcash National School were joint winners of the Jack O Gorman Perpetual Shield for the Best Boys Small School’s Group 2 competition. Ballyneale National School was the winner of the John Power Perpetual Shield for the Best Girls Medium School competition. Ballyneale National School was the winner of the John Power Perpetual Shield for the Best Girls Medium 1 School competition. New Inn Boys National School was the winner of the Bill Hyland Perpetual Shield for the Best Boys Medium School Group 1 competition. Moyglass were also the winners of the Medium School group 2 for the Best Girls School competition while they also won the Best Boys School award in this category. Clerihan National School was the winner of the Joe Holden Perpetual Shield for the Best Girls Large School competition. Holy Trinity Fethard was the winner of the Jack Bergin Perpetual Shield for the Best Boys Large School competition. Powerstown National School was the winner of the Jim Cliffe Perpetual Shield for the Major Girls schools and Powerstown National School were also the winner of the Paddy Mullins Perpetual Shield in the Major Boys event.
