Brilliant news for Clonmel Athletic Club and the new Sports Hub

Today is a wonderful day for Clonmel Athletic Club with the final sign off on funding for the Sports Hub and the progression to the Construction phase of the hugely ambitious project in the LIT grounds on the Frank Drohan Road, Clonmel. Today’s announcement is a just reward for a project in the making since December 2014. The Clonmel Sports Hub which boasts a playground, Circumference walkway and grass running track, an off-road cycling track, a club specific Pavilion to house storage and meeting area and a 400-meter world class Track. The arrival at this juncture has at times seemed close and, on many occasions, never so far away as a dedicated team laboured over the many obstacles that presented over the past six years.

The unprecedented multi-disciplinary approach set this project apart from all others as a development team including representatives from local Industry, Sports partnership, LIT, County Council, Architects and three invested clubs put their forces together giving the project a unique set of objectives from all perspectives. This uniqueness contributed greatly to the successful grant application to the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund which married the Sports Hub with the extensive development proposed for the Kickham Barracks in Clonmel. This grant application necessitated that a significant amount of funding was put in place prior to application and this was met by the Clubs in question and the generous contribution pledges made by the associated Industries and timely assistance from our Public Representatives. The turning point came when this money was granted subject to various terms and conditions which all have been adhered to with the final say coming today with the commitment of funds and the successful contractor ready to commence works as soon as Covid Restrictions allow.

This ambitious project will provide an opportunity for all in South Tipperary to enjoy a safe area to run, cycle, walk and play regardless of ability. Clonmel Athletic Club has invested heavily in the project and will need the assistance of its many members and supporters going forward to meet this financial commitment. The Club is running a very successful Lotto at present and would encourage all to get involved with a Jackpot of 12500 looking for a new home. The Track which will be constructed to a World Class facility will meet the needs of Clonmel Athletic Club for many generations to come with all athletics disciplines accommodated including running, jumping, throwing and walking. Clonmel Athletic Club would like to thank all those who have contributed to this once in lifetime opportunity. Our Development Committee have been un-waivered from the beginning and set about their task with great vigour and enthusiasm only matched by that of the Council members they encountered on the way who were supportive and welcoming and keen to make progress. Industry was always to the forefront and a vital piece in the Jig Saw. Great credit must go to Andrew Kearney RIP who led the Development Committee providing selflessly his time and expertise in the pursuit of perfection. As we step forward, we do so with great expectation and promise.  What better way for Clonmel Athletic Club to celebrate its 50 years in Town.
