The Canon Hayes Recreation Centre 5k road race took place last night in Tipperary Town with good running conditions. The race attracted over 100 athletes. The race started and soon a group of athletes dictated the pace at the front including our own Gavin English. Then at around 2K the leading group was down to two, John Hartnett of An Bru AC and Gavin, these two athletes went stride for stride for the next 2k and as they approached the 4k mark, Gavin increased the pace and soon drew clear, he kept that strong pace going to come home a very worthy and convincing winner in 17 mins 37 secs, fantastic running by this athlete. This was Gavin’s first introduction to road races. He is coached by Anthony Moynihan and he recently won the Munster under 18 400m. Then we had Aine Roche also running well when finishing 2nd woman in 20 mins 17 secs, Neil Proven also ran well when finishing 20th in 20 mins 35 secs.
