The Le Cheile AC Night of 5ks took place on their track in Leixlip last Friday night. The last race of the night was for sub 16-minute athletes and here we had Evan Fitzgerald on the starting line. The race with 22 athletes started and after about 3 laps a group of three athletes began to set the pace, Evan along with Noel Carroll and Ben Brunton. On the 4th lap Evan went to the front and set a good pace that had the athletes clipping along at 74 secs lap pace. Then with 1200m to go Ben went to the front and injected a strong pace with both Noel and Evan hot on his heels. With about 1000m to go Evan and Noel passed Ben and as they approached the 800m mark it was down to these two athletes and over the final two laps they matched stride for stride with none of them giving an inch, they were still together at the bell, reaching it in 14 mins 8 secs. They were still shoulder to shoulder down the back straight and coming off the bend both of them were still together. Then in a hectic run to the finish line Even edged it on the line to win by 0.38 of a second in a photo finish, brilliant performances by both athletes who left everything on the Track, brilliant track race that was admired by all present to see. Evan’s winning time was 15 mins 12.35 secs, a Personal Best, brilliant performance.
