The National Novice Men’s 6K Cross Country Championships took place last Sunday in Dunboyne, Co Meath where conditions were demanding. In the final race of the programme, the Men’s 6k race, over 4 laps, was very competitive with a very large entry of 203 athletes competing and representing over 50 clubs. Evan Fitzgerald was making his debut in these Championships and what a performance. After the usual hectic start of the race the field was still bunched together as they came around on the first lap with Evan in the low 40s. Then as the race progresses Evan worked his way through the field and going out on the final lap he was in the low teens and running very well. He maintained that strong pace and in a hectic run to the finish he held off a few late challenges to finish a very creditable 10th in 21 mins 53 secs, brilliant running.
