Fantastic win by Kevin Maunsell, great performance by William Maunsell

The Irish Runner 5 Mile Road Race took place in glorious sunshine today in the Phoenix Park on Saturday 17th June 2017. This race attracted a top class entry including both Kevin and William Maunsell. Kevin came into this race in very good form having broken 30 minutes for a 10,000m Track race in Highgate in England and he followed that up with a great performance in the Dunboyne 5 mile road race organised by the BHAA. In that race Kevin went stride for stride with Mick Clohisey of Raheny Shamrocks and both of them put in two brilliant performances with Mick winning in 23 mins 27 secs and Kevin clocking a PB of 23 36 for the distance with Peter Somba of Dunboyne 3rd in 24 mins 39 secs.

Back to today’s race and here the pace was strong for the first two miles and just after halfway Kevin upped the pace and Peter Somba went with him and they were together until the 4th mile and here Kevin put in another surge that saw him draw clear of everyone and he kept that pace going to win in 24 mins 18 secs with Sean Hehir (Rathfarnham WSAF) 2nd in 24 mins 29 secs, John Coghlan (MSB) and then we had William Maunsell also running a brilliant race when finishing strongly in 4th place in 24 mins 38 secs with Peter Somba (Dunboyne) 5th in 24 mins 44 secs followed by Freddy Sittuk (Raheny Shamrocks) 6th in 24 misn 45 secs and Mark Kenneally 7th in 25 mins 24 secs. It is great to see Mark Kenneally running well again after a lengthy layoff due to injuries. Mark won the Clonmel AC 10K in 2006. It is brilliant to see such great performances by both Kevin and William Maunsell.
