Club’s AGM

This year’s Annual General Meeting was very well attended, best attendance for quite some time and great to see. The Chairman, Frank Lynch, welcomed everyone to the meeting and the various reports from the Secretary, Register and PRO were well received as was the Treasurer’s report, which showed that the Club’s finances were in a good state. The Chairman in his final address as Chairman thanks everyone who helped the Club during the year on all fronts and he singled out the Club’s 500K Team Challenge as one of the highlights during the year as it caught the imagination of many athletes and was a brilliant success. There was a good discussion on a number of topics that the incoming Management Committee will take on board and help bring the Club to another level as we continue to grow and develop. Both Frank Lynch and Dee Collins were praised for all their work during the past number of years as Chairman and Secretary respectively as both were stepping down after giving great service to the Club.

Great performance by Michael Carey

The National Novice Cross Country Championship took place last Sunday in Dundalk IT on a good course. Michael Carey was competing in this Championship for the very first time. He went out steady and after the first lap was in the chasing pack. He gradually made progress over the latter stages of the race and in a hectic finish put in a great effort when finishing 7th, brilliant performance. This was a great performance by Michael who is having a great season, having already won the County Novice Cross Country title in October.

County Junior and Senior Cross Country Championships

These County Championships bring the curtain down on the County Cross Country season next Sunday when they are decided in Galbally, hosted by Mooreabbey Milers. Hopefully we can end the season on a high note with good performances in all four races. Athletes please note that the Junior races will start at 12 noon while the Senior Women’s race could start as early as 12,30pm followed immediately by the Senior Men’s Race. in the Men’s race we will be going all out to win the County Inter Club title for the 5th year in a row and with athletes like Kevin and William Maunsell, Nigel O Flaherty, Michael Carey and Joey Feery to name but a few we are well capable of such an achievement, an achievement never achieved before by the Club, so one well worth getting all our athletes out to achieve. In the Women’s race we are also well capable of retaining the Sureprint Cup if we can get all our athletes competing.

Clonmel Senior Athletic Club Notes 18th December

Colm McCarthy and William Maunsell County Champions

Galbally was the venue last Sunday for the County Junior and Senior Cross Country Championships. In the Junior Men’s race Colm McCarthy ran very well to win his first County Cross Country title in fine style when coming home a very convincing winner. In the Senior Men’s race we also had great performances. Here William and Kevin Maunsell served up two brilliant efforts as they went stride for stride over the demanding 5 lap course. In the end it came down to a sprint finish with William edging it close to the line when winning in 35 mins 35 secs with Kevin a second adrift. These were tow great performances and congrats to William on winning his first County Senior title having finishing 2nd last year and in 2013 while he was 3rd in 2014. Then we had Joey Feery also running very well when finishing 19th in 42 mins and Nigel O Flaherty 26th in 44 mins 3 secs with James O Brien also running well when finishing 35th in 47 mins 2 secs. The team of William, Kevin, Joey and Nigel won the inter Club Bronze medals.

It was a pity that we couldn’t field a team for the women’s race as it was our first time since 2007 that we hadn’t a team in this event as some of our athletes went to another event. As the curtain comes down on the County Cross Country season we can reflect on some very good performances while we ponder on why we couldn’t field teams in any of the women’s races this year at County Cross Country level. Hopefully this is only a blip and that we can resume our strong presence in the Women’s races at both County and Munster levels in 2017.

Anthony Tobin wins National 20K Bronze medal

The National 20Km Walk Championships took place in Cork last Sunday. In a select quality field Anthony Tobin put in a brilliant performance when walking the 20Km, which is the equivalent of 12.4 miles in a PB of 99 mins 44.06 secs. This was Anthony’s first Senior Championship event and he mixed it well to record such a great performance. To make this achievement all the more, he achieved it on the CIT 400m tartan track walking for 49 laps, tough event, averaging just over 2 minutes a lap. This was a great way for Anthony to finish off 2016.

The South Tipp Physios 500K Team Challenge – Brilliant success

The very successful South Tipp Physios 500K Team Challenge promoted by Clonmel Athletic Club finish with a flourish when a record entry competed in the last event of the Challenge, the MSD Be Well 4 mile road race on St Stephen’s Day. The Club would like to thank South Tipp Physio for sponsoring this unique event.

This Challenge has been a fantastic success and great credit must go to all the team members who set out last January on such a Challenge. This competition challenged the members of each team to run a combined 500 kilometres in 2016 in races ranging from 4k to Half Marathons. This Challenge consisted of 29 races spread over the full year and that in itself was appealing to many of the team members as they had never done such a Challenge like this before that is keep training and competing in a variety of races for a full year. Many of them found this a brilliant Challenge as they had something to aim for throughout the year and so it made their training all the more satisfying. At times the Challenged look daunting but the team spirit and the cajoling of the team Captains, texts and threats or treats combined very well to get the 27 teams over the finishing line. The Club would like to thank everyone who took part in the Challenge and hopefully it will give you the encouragement to continue training and participating in events for 2017. The final table of this Challenge is below and if you have any queries, please contact Niall at 086 1660888 and he will help you. We intend to have an Achiever’s Party later this month, watch this space for the details.
