Great performances in County Championships

Sunday last saw Clonmel Athletic Club travel to the first County Cross Country Event in Moyne, Co. Tipperary. The weather was again very understanding for all concerned as a most untypical day of sunshine and settled conditions prevailed for the race programme much to the delight of the 39 strong Clonmel Juveniles that competed on behalf of the club, many of who were making their Championship debut for the Club.

The first race on the programme was the Girls U/10, 600 meters race here Clonmel had four competitors. Anna Carey finished a very strong 6th place after a fine performance followed in by Eva Fennessy 28th, Chloe Conway 47th and Annie Hughes in 53rd.

The boys U/10 say no fewer than 11 athletes competing for the CLub. The foursome of Conor Murphy, 2nd, Colm McCarthy, 7th, Peter O Dowd, 16th and Conor McGrath, 21st combined to win Bronze medals in the Team event. Other fine performers in this race were Elliot Fennessy, George Mordaunt, Sean O Donnell, Ryan McCullagh, James Wright, Fergus English and Michael Cleary.

The Girls U/14, 1200 meters produced a very competitive event with six of Clonmel’s finest stepping up to the line. Orlaith Moynihan produced the sprint of the day to finish a brilliant 3rd place followed closely by Megan O Brien in 5th. Aoife Laste, 7th and Roisin Cleary, 8th. This team won the gold for Clonmel. Laura Tobin and Lorraine Doyle ran brilliantly just narrowly missing out on the team placing.

In the Boys under 14, 1500mts Patrick Cleary had a great run to finish 6th followed by Anthony Tobin, 9th and Alex Chadfield in 12th place and sure to improve as the season progresses.

In the girls under 16, 2000 meters Marie Doverman ran consistently to finish in 10th.

The Race of the day was the Boys under 16, 3000 meters where Sean Tobin showed a clean set of spikes to the field from start to finish to win the race convincingly. Reece Maher had the race of his life to finish 3rd closely followed by Michael Carey in 5th. This Team combined to win the Team event. Evan Lynch performed well to finish in 7th.

Clonmel now on a high saw Cliona Doyle win the under 18, 3000 meters in fantastic form to earn Clonmel’s second individual gold.

Clonmel’s last performer was Brian Looram in the boys under 18, 5000 meters. Brian dug in from start to finish and earned himself fine silver, just reward for a brave run.

Next Sunday the Club travel to the Turnpike for day two of the County championships so fingers crossed for another days as good as the first.
