The 3rd race of the Clonmel Athletic Club’s Winter Series of races was held last week in ideal conditions and so we were able to organise the Countdown to Zero race in ideal conditions. In this format each athletes predicts their finishing time and then run the race without the aid of a watch. Last week we started the Countdown clock at 28 minutes and each athletes then went off at their predicted finishing time as the clock counted down to zero seconds. Read the rest of this entry »

This Classic event takes place this weekend and it is great to see many athletes from the County competing. Please note the starting times for this year’s Dublin City marathon. They have introduced a Elite Ladies group and they get underway at 8.45am. Then at 9.05am the Wheelchair participants start followed at 9.10am with the Start for the elite men and the rest of the field. The Club traveled to Doon Co Limerick for the first Munster Cross Country Championships of the season and we had some brilliant performances. In the first race of the day Nicole Byrne making her Munster Championship debut for the Club ran a brilliant race. She was well positioned throughout the race and as the race progressed she improved and went on to run very well to finish 16th and played a major role in helping the County team to win the Gold medals, Nicole was the 5th scorer on the County team. Last Saturday three of our athletes were chosen to participate in a regional Squad training session for Walkers. By all accounts it was a very good training sessions, thoroughly enjoyed by the athletes. The three athletes that participated were Jade Looby, Dean Looby and Evan Lynch and they were accompanied to Limerick by their coach Frank Lynch.

The Dublin City marathon takes place at the end of the month and I have penned together some helpful advice. I would like to wish the best of luck to all who are competing, especially those who are making their debut over this distance. The West Waterford Open Cross Country race took place last Sunday in ideal conditions. Niall McCormack rejoined the Club recently and he got his Cross Country season off to a brilliant start when running a very impressive race against some strong competition. Niall ran very well to finish 4th in 25 mins 17 secs to win the Junior men’s prize. Then we had Derek Nolan also showing a very return to form when finishing 25th in 29 mins 49 secs.

Doon is the Venue for the Munster Novice Cross Country Championships. The Club has a strong Ladies team traveling and they will be going all out to do very well in the Inter Club team event. Many of them are also on the County team that will be defending the Inter County title. Our ladies squad is as follows: Aine Roche, Catherine Rice, Sarah Whelan, Maria Walsh and Donna Nagle.

Susan’s wins the ‘Lucky Dip’

The first race of the Winter Series of Races took place in fabulous weather conditions last week and as usual attracted a record entry for this series. This series of races is a fantastic means for all those wishing to get started as we have a 1 lap race and a 2 lap race. The two lap race is great for those that want to increase the distance and run well over 4k. Whatever your chosen distance or pace, you are always extremely welcome at this series of races that will continue every Wednesday night up to and including the of November and if you come along any night you will see for yourself that we really do cater for everyone. If you haven’t joined already you are still more than welcome to come along any night that you can make it. This series of races is held at 7 pm close to the Brothers of Charity complex, St Patrick’s Road, Silversprings and the entry fee is only 3 Euros. This series of races will have a different race format each night to cater for all levels of ability. This year all monies collected will go towards the purchase of a defibbalator for Clonmel AC. On Sunday last Vasiliy Neumerzhitskiy and Valeriu Turcon fine tuned their preparations for the upcoming Dublin City marathon when they competed in a Half Marathon in Longford. Valera and Vasiliy were well positioned throughout the race and over the final kms they upped the pace to finish 3rd and 4th respectively. Valeriu’s tine was 76mins 36 secs while Vasiliy’s time was 77 mins 6 secs. Vasiliy won the 0/40 award, great running.
