We had athletes competing in the inaugural 8K road race in Mitchelstown and it was great to see Club athletes return the compliment as they were great supporters of the Clogheen 5K this year. Vasiliy Neumerzhitskily ran well over what is a short distance by his standards and he showed that he could travel well over the shorter distances when finishing 3rd 0/40 in 29 mins 41 secs. Tommy Cahill won the 0/55 award in 32 mins 9 secs with Ned O Brien 2nd 0/55 in 33 mins 46 secs. Julia Tideswell was 2nd 0/45 in 39 mins 3 secs, great running.
Club athletes competed in a number of venues over the weekend and it was great to see so many of our Club members running so well. In the Rathgormack 5 Mile Road Race we had Eoin McGrath running very well when finishing 7th in 29 mins 18 secs over what was a demanding course. Then we had Niall O Ceallaigh winning 2nd 0/40 award when finishing 10th overall in 29 mins 34 secs. Larry Martin continued his recent good form when finishing 18th in 30 mins 20 secs, 25 secs faster than last year. Then we had Dick O Gorman winning the 0/45 award when running well to finish 24th in 30 misn 27 secs. Then we had Angela McCann having a fantastic duel with Martina O Dwyer of Carrick on Suir in what are turning out to be Classic tussles over any distance and they are so evenly matched. It was the same scenario again in Rathgormack as it was in the Ballymac 5 miler. These two athletes of immense talent were involved in a major battle right to the line. Martina was ahead of Angela heading out but after about a mile the roles were reversed with Angela taking the lead. They were matching stride for stride throughout the race and they were going at a very strong pace. It was a battle of wills over the final hurdle and with 20 metres to go it was literally neck and neck between the two athletes as Martina made a last effort but Angela responded immediately and the sprint finish between the two saw Angela just hit the line ahead of Martina, both gave it their all and provided a spectacular race once again for the spectators and both were thrilled to have pushed each other to their limit so credit where credit is due. Angela’s time was 30 mins 28 secs and she was 2nd Senior Lady with Martina 2 seconds adrift. It just goes to show you how much an athlete can achieved when pushed all the way when you consider that Angela ran 31 mins 51 secs in this race last year, so well done Ladies.
Then we had Liam Casey running well when finishing 36th in 32 mins 31 secs with Aine Roche finishing 4th Senior lady next in 32 mins 47 secs, 14 seconds faster than last year. Conor Morkan was 42nd in 33 mins 14 secs, 70 seconds faster than last year, James O Brien 47th in 33 mins 54 secs, Robbie Condon 52nd in 34 mins 10 secs, Maurice Boland who was 3rd 0/55 in 55th place in 34 mins 39 secs, 3 mins 57 secs faster than last year, great running, John Laste 71st in 37 mins 17 secs, Nicola Maunsell 75th in 37 mins 38 secs, 2 mins 22 secs faster than last year, Gints Plaudis 78th in 37 mins 38 secs, Tom Quinn 81st in 38 min 34 secs, 2 mins 37 secs faster than last year, Tom Halley 82nd in 38 mins 36 secs, Joe Grinsell won the 0/60 award when finishing 84th in 38 mins 51 secs with T J O Loughlin 2nd 0/60 in 94th in 42 mins 20 secs and Eamon Crowley 3rd 0/60 when finishing 83rd In 42 mins 53 secs, a clean sweep, Hazel Galloway won the Ladies 0/50 award when finishing 102nd in 46 mins 19 secs.
