International School’s win by Evan Lynch

July 21st, 2010 admin

Last Saturday Scotstoun Stadium, Glasgow was the venue for the Schools International annual event. In this competition athletic teams are picked from Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England in every Track and Field Event at Intermediate age category. The athletes represent their respective schools and countries each trying to covet the overall team prize. Evan Lynch was picked to represent Gaelcholaiste Cheitinn which he attends in Clonmel. Evan is Schools and Tailteann games Race Walking champion and was picked to represent Ireland for his exploits in both. Evan went to the championships with great expectations and he didn’t disappoint. Evan participating in the 3KM walk led the race from start to finish in very blustery conditions. The blustery conditions were not going to dampen Evan’s enthusiasm as he walked to victory in a personal best time of 13 mins 27 secs. Evan was pursued all the way by Nathan Douglas from England who finished in second place and Patrick Bell for Ireland who finished in third place.

Phoebe, Jaco and Sean – All Ireland Champions, Jason and Michael Silver medallists

July 21st, 2010 admin

July 4th 2010 will go down as one of the Club’s finest hours of competition as our athletes won three All Ireland titles with another two athletes winning Silver medals and that is just after Day one of the All Ireland Track and Field Championships. Great credit must go to all these athletes for such fine achievements and it is important to thank our Coaches who along with the athletes have put in such hard and rewarding work, these achievements are a credit to all the team, athletes and coaches alike.
The day got off to a brilliant start with the Girls under 13 80m heats. Here Phoebe Murphy ran a well judged race to win her heat with ease. Then in the final she produced her best performance of the year when she ran the proverbial blinder to win the Gold medal in 10.63 secs and in the process defeated the defending Champion. She improved on her Munster winning performance of 11.11 secs, brilliant running.
In the Girls under 15 Roisin Cleary qualified for the final and here she ran a very determined race, always just off the leading group, she put in a great effort over the final lap and in a hectic tussle over the final 150m Roisin ran very well when finishing a close 4th in 2 mins 24.31 secs, very close to her PB. Roisin had the satisfaction of improving not only on her Munster performance by 2.37 secs when she won the Silver medal and but also of reversing placings with the Munster Champion.
In the Boys Under 18 Javelin Jaco Oosthuysen once again produced a fine array of throws with his best throw of 54.92m winning the event by over 8 metres. This was a brilliant performance by Jaco who is having a great year this year – winning the All Ireland Junior Javelin title last week in Tullamore as well as winning Silver in the All Ireland Schools in early June.
Shayne O Brien competing in his first ever All Ireland will have savoured the occasion and this experience will stand to him. Shayne performed well when clearing 1.5m. Cliona Doyle competed in the Girls under 18 300m where despite the very demanding conditions ran well when finishing in 12 mins 38.02 secs.
Michael Carey competed in the Boys under 17 2000m Steeplechase. Michael has shown great progress in this event which he only took up at the start of the season in the East Munster Schools in April. He has improved with every outing and last weekend he produced his best performance of the year when winning the Silver medal in 6 mins 38.18 secs. In the race Michael along with the eventual winner set a fast pace and they soon opened a gap on the rest of the field. Midway through the race the winner increased the pace but this didn’t deter Michael who was running well especially using good technique at the water jump. Michael maintained his effort all the way to the line to win his first individual All Ireland medal, a just reward for all the hard and enjoyable training over the past six years or so with the Club. This was a brilliant performance and I have no doubt that Michael will enjoy this fantastic achievement. Clare Horgan competed in the Girls under 16 800m. Clare ran well when finishing in 2 mins 39 secs in what was a very competitive race.
Jason Mullins competed in the Boys under 18 Shot Putt and he performed very well. Jason produced a fine array of throws with his Best effort of 12.61m winning the Silver medal. This was a fine performance by Jason who equalled his PB set at this year’s All Ireland Schools Championships.
Reece Maher competed in the Boys under 16 3000m. This was his first time tackling this distance at National level and he will have learned a lot from this experience. In what were very blustery conditions he performed well when finishing in 10 mins 51.24 secs.
Sean Tobin competed in the Boys Under 17 3000m. Here after the initial charge the field soon settled with Sean well positioned on the shoulder of the leaders watching every move. As they approached the 2K mark Sean went into the lead and made every stride a winning one as he extended his lead all the way to the line to win very impressively in 9 mins 14.82 secs.

Magical Munster Golds For Jaco, Phoebe, Reece and Jason

July 21st, 2010 admin

Cork Institute of Technology was the scene for the third and final days of the Munster Juvenile outdoor athletics last weekend, 26th and 27th June. It was certainly a weekend of two halves with a chilling breeze on Saturday being replaced by glorious sunshine on Sunday. Many of our athletes were in competition on both days and well done to all who put in a big effort in the weekend gone.
Our youngest competitor of the weekend was Alan Boland who competed in the Boys under 12 Ball Throw, 600mts and the Long Jump. Alan performed very well in all three recording a PB of 3.27mts in the Long Jump. Chloe Lynch threw well in the girls under 13 Javelin getting to the last eight. Phoebe Murphy competed in the girls under 13, 80mts and what a weekend she had. Phoebe won her heat and semi final putting her in the center lane for the final. Phoebe shot from the starting blocks into a lead in the final she would hold to the line despite much competition earning her the gold medal and a sprint Munster title. Clare Horgan was in fine form again this weekend and ran a great race on Saturday to earn her second place in the girls under 16, 1500 meters. Clare was in competition again on Sunday where she ran in the 800 meters midst stiff competition finishing very strongly in third place. In the boys under 16 Reece Maher raced on Saturday in the 1500 meters and finished in sixth place keeping his big effort for his now favored event the 3000 meters. On Sunday morning Reece was one of the first of the Clonmel athletes to compete and he set the tone in the 3000 taking the lead from the gun extending this lead for every lap thereafter giving an exhibition of running to earn him gold with over 100 meters to spare on the his nearest competitor. Reece finished in a time of 9.59 a PB for a runner on the way up. In the boys under 17 Shayne O Brien competed in both the High Jump and 800 meters recording two strong performances. Ben Browne ran well in the 200 meters and 100 meters where he progressed to the final. In the Boys under 18 Jason Mullins followed on from his recent success in the National Schools to put in solid throws in the Shot and Discus. Jason was never in doubt in the Discus competition where he threw just short of 40 meters beating the field by 5 or more meters. Jason was not content with one medal and threw consistently in the Shot Putt competition  finishing in the Bronze position. Jaco Oosthuysen another athlete in incredible form this year competed on Saturday in the boys under 18 Javelin competition. Jaco threw the Javelin out over 48 meters winning yet another Munster Championship and just reward to such a dedicated athlete. Brain Loorham put in two performances in the Boys under 19 200 and 1500 mts. Brian was narrowly kept out of the medals in the 200 finishing in fourth place however he was well up to the mark in the 1500 producing a solid performance to earn him second place and the silver medal.
In the girls under 18 we had Cliona Doyle in the 3000 meters. This event saw the boys and girls race being set off together and a blistering pace in the heat was soon in motion. Cliona was equal to the task and delivered a fine performance finishing in third place and taking home the bronze medal.
This was certainly a weekend to remember with athletes putting themselves forward at whole new levels and setting all sorts of expectations for the three days of All Irelands that will take place in July. Well done to all.

Tailteann Gold medal performance by Evan Lynch

July 21st, 2010 admin

On Saturday, the 26th June, Clonmel athletic Club had no fewer than three athletes representing their respective Schools at the prestigious Tailteann Irish Schools Athletics Interprovincial. This competition caters for the best athletes from the Irish Schools championships. The Clonmel Trio of Evan Lynch, Michael Carey and Sean Tobin were picked on the Munster Intermediate team to do battle in Tullamore.
Evan Lynch was the first to compete and he was representing Gaelcholaiste Cheitinn, Clonmel. Evan still a junior walker was brought up an age as one of the Munster hopefuls and he didn’t disappoint. Evan participating in the 3000 meter walk took the race in his stride from the gun staying in the pack for the first 800 meters before making the decisive move to go. Evan’s victory was never in doubt from this on and he extended his lead to over a minute when crossing the line in first place. Evan’s performance coupled with his win in the Junior All Ireland Schools competition is almost definite to earn him a place on the Irish Schools International Side which will compete in Scotstoun, Glasgow on the 17th of July.
Michael Carey representing the High School, Clonmel participated in the 1500 meter Steeplechase a relatively new event for Michael. Michael was is the pack for the duration of the event and finished very strongly in sixth place.
Sean Tobin also representing the High School, Clonmel was picked to run the 1500 meters and what a race it turned out to be. Sean is growing in each performance this year but he is among the most talented middle distance runners this country had ever seen. Sean settled quickly in a lightening fast race. Sean gave his all but had to be satisfied with fourth place in a competition which saw the first three run under 4 minutes and first and second better the 25 year old record.
This was an exceptional day for Clonmel athletes and congratulations to all concerned

Irish Schools Record for Evan Lynch

July 21st, 2010 admin

The Woodie’s DIY Irish Schools Track and Field Championships 2010 took place on Saturday, the 5th of June in the stunning Tullamore Sunshine and Heat. The conditions were prefect and the scene set for what was to be a memorable day for the Clonmel Athletic Club athletes each representing their respective schools in the quest for National Glory.
Evan Lynch representing Gaelcolaiste Cheitinn, Cluain Meala was the first to take to the Track in the Junior boys 1200 meter Walk. Evan was quickly into his stride and set a pace that none of his opposition could manage pulling away in a blistering first lap. The race was over quiet early on leaving Evan with an opportunity to chase the record held for the past eight years. Evan stuck to his task in the brilliant heat and crossed the line in 5 minutes 9.04 seconds a mere 3 seconds inside the existing record of 5.12.
Jason Mullins representing the High School was in fine form finishing in fourth place in the Intermediate boys Shot with a throw of 12.61m a PB but still keeping a little in hand for his stronger event the Discus. Jason pulled out all the stops in the Discus leaving it all to the last throw to fling the Discus out to a remarkable 40.09m when all thought the competition was over. Jason in his last throw went from sixth place to a Bronze medal and a chance to stand on the podium knowing he had produced a PB when it was needed most.
Michael Carey representing the High School competed in the boys Intermediate 1500 meter Steeplechase and ran a reputable 4 minutes 50.78 seconds to earn a credible 6th place in the National Championships. Michael a recent convert to this event is turning many heads with his natural ability.
Roisin Cleary representing the Presentation Convent Clonmel had a great race in the Junior girls 800 meter which saw her run a PB of 2 minutes 24.09 seconds earning her sixth place in a very competitive final.
Jaco Oosthuysen representing the High School Clonmel is in fantastic form of late and threw 51.73m in the Senior Boys Javelin. Jaco who on his day can throw over 54 meters was only narrowly beaten into second place by the winning throw of 51.94m. Jaco stood on the podium delighted with his Silver medal in the knowledge that better days await.
Sean Tobin representing the High School Clonmel was the last of the Clonmel athletes to take to the track in the 1500 meters. Sean had decided to stick to one event and stood on the line with probably the most talented male runners that this event had ever seen. Sean was not fazed in any way and ran a fine 4 minutes 6.02 seconds to finish in 5th place.
A  Great day was had by all who competed in what was one of the most competitive days of Schools athletics with many long standing records being toppled. Congratulations to one and all.

The Munster Juvenile Track and Field Championships took place in glorious sunshine on Sunday, June 6th, in Castleisland. In the Boys Under 2 by 2 tem event our team of Colm McCarthy and Conor Murphy performed very well in the 600m. This event is based on the combined times of the athletes. In the 600m Conor ran very well when finishing a close 5th and then we had Colm McCarthy also running very well when finishing a very good 4th. Their combined times saw them win the Silver medal and in the process qualified for the All Ireland Championship to be held in Templemore. We had Evan Phelan and Simon Lowe competing in the Boys under 10 2 by 2 Ball Throw team event and they performed very well when finishing a close 4th. Earlier in the day they ran very well in their sprint races. In the Girls under 14 1500m Lorraine Doyle ran very well. In the Girls under 14 80m Hurdles Saoirse McGeever ran a brilliant race despite a bad start to win the Bronze medal. In the Boys under 14 Javelin we had Johan Oosthuysen competing in the Javelin and he performed very well when winning the Bronze medal. The performance of the day was in the Girls under 15 1500m final. Here Orlaith Moynihan went into this race having won the Silver medal in this event in the County Championship in a time of 5 mins 16 secs. In the final after the initial charge four athletes including Orlaith set the pace and they soon opened a gap on the chasing pack. Then after about 500m Orlaith went to the front as the pace dropped and she increased the tempo and soon the leading group was in Indian file as Orlaith kept the strong pace going. At the bell she was still leading with the leading group now down to two. As they went down the back straight Orlaith put in a fast surge to withstand the challenge, then as they came around the final bend she kicked again coming into the straight and came home a convincing winner in 5 mins 5 secs,  a brilliant performance in  a Personal Best as well as being crowned Munster Champion.  Laura Tobin also ran well in this race.
