We had athletes competing in the inaugural 8K road race in Mitchelstown and it was great to see Club athletes return the compliment as they were great supporters of the Clogheen 5K this year. Vasiliy Neumerzhitskily ran well over what is a short distance by his standards and he showed that he could travel well over the shorter distances when finishing 3rd 0/40 in 29 mins 41 secs. Tommy Cahill won the 0/55 award in 32 mins 9 secs with Ned O Brien 2nd 0/55 in 33 mins 46 secs. Julia Tideswell was 2nd 0/45 in 39 mins 3 secs, great running.
Club athletes competed in a number of venues over the weekend and it was great to see so many of our Club members running so well. In the Rathgormack 5 Mile Road Race we had Eoin McGrath running very well when finishing 7th in 29 mins 18 secs over what was a demanding course. Then we had Niall O Ceallaigh winning 2nd 0/40 award when finishing 10th overall in 29 mins 34 secs. Larry Martin continued his recent good form when finishing 18th in 30 mins 20 secs, 25 secs faster than last year. Then we had Dick O Gorman winning the 0/45 award when running well to finish 24th in 30 misn 27 secs. Then we had Angela McCann having a fantastic duel with Martina O Dwyer of Carrick on Suir in what are turning out to be Classic tussles over any distance and they are so evenly matched. It was the same scenario again in Rathgormack as it was in the Ballymac 5 miler. These two athletes of immense talent were involved in a major battle right to the line. Martina was ahead of Angela heading out but after about a mile the roles were reversed with Angela taking the lead. They were matching stride for stride throughout the race and they were going at a very strong pace. It was a battle of wills over the final hurdle and with 20 metres to go it was literally neck and neck between the two athletes as Martina made a last effort but Angela responded immediately and the sprint finish between the two saw Angela just hit the line ahead of Martina, both gave it their all and provided a spectacular race once again for the spectators and both were thrilled to have pushed each other to their limit so credit where credit is due. Angela’s time was 30 mins 28 secs and she was 2nd Senior Lady with Martina 2 seconds adrift. It just goes to show you how much an athlete can achieved when pushed all the way when you consider that Angela ran 31 mins 51 secs in this race last year, so well done Ladies.
Then we had Liam Casey running well when finishing 36th in 32 mins 31 secs with Aine Roche finishing 4th Senior lady next in 32 mins 47 secs, 14 seconds faster than last year. Then we had Angela McCann running in her 2nd race in less than 25 hours and having a blinder. She ran a great race to finish 2nd in the Ladies race by just one second from Martina O Dwyer of Carrick on Suir, these two Ladies have produced great performances during the year and last Friday’s night they produced another great competition. James O Brien showed a return to top form when finishing 51st in 33 mins 4 secs. Maurice is another athlete that competed in the Clogheen 5k and Ballymacarbry 5 miler in less than 25 hours. Last Saturday Scotstoun Stadium, Glasgow was the venue for the Schools International annual event. In this competition athletic teams are picked from Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England in every Track and Field Event at Intermediate age category. The athletes represent their respective schools and countries each trying to covet the overall team prize. Evan Lynch was picked to represent Gaelcholaiste Cheitinn which he attends in Clonmel. Evan is Schools and Tailteann games Race Walking champion and was picked to represent Ireland for his exploits in both. Evan went to the championships with great expectations and he didn’t disappoint. Evan participating in the 3KM walk led the race from start to finish in very blustery conditions. The blustery conditions were not going to dampen Evan’s enthusiasm as he walked to victory in a personal best time of 13 mins 27 secs. Evan was pursued all the way by Nathan Douglas from England who finished in second place and Patrick Bell for Ireland who finished in third place.
The County Senior Track and Field Championships took place in ideal conditions on Tuesday 29th June in Templemore. Hazel Galloway had a great Championship. July 4th 2010 will go down as one of the Club’s finest hours of competition as our athletes won three All Ireland titles with another two athletes winning Silver medals and that is just after Day one of the All Ireland Track and Field Championships. Great credit must go to all these athletes for such fine achievements and it is important to thank our Coaches who along with the athletes have put in such hard and rewarding work, these achievements are a credit to all the team, athletes and coaches alike.
The day got off to a brilliant start with the Girls under 13 80m heats. Here Phoebe Murphy ran a well judged race to win her heat with ease. Then in the final she produced her best performance of the year when she ran the proverbial blinder to win the Gold medal in 10.63 secs and in the process defeated the defending Champion. She improved on her Munster winning performance of 11.11 secs, brilliant running.
In the Girls under 15 Roisin Cleary qualified for the final and here she ran a very determined race, always just off the leading group, she put in a great effort over the final lap and in a hectic tussle over the final 150m Roisin ran very well when finishing a close 4th in 2 mins 24.31 secs, very close to her PB. Roisin had the satisfaction of improving not only on her Munster performance by 2.37 secs when she won the Silver medal and but also of reversing placings with the Munster Champion.
In the Boys Under 18 Javelin Jaco Oosthuysen once again produced a fine array of throws with his best throw of 54.92m winning the event by over 8 metres. This was a brilliant performance by Jaco who is having a great year this year – winning the All Ireland Junior Javelin title last week in Tullamore as well as winning Silver in the All Ireland Schools in early June.
Shayne O Brien competing in his first ever All Ireland will have savoured the occasion and this experience will stand to him. Shayne performed well when clearing 1.5m. Cliona Doyle competed in the Girls under 18 300m where despite the very demanding conditions ran well when finishing in 12 mins 38.02 secs.
Michael Carey competed in the Boys under 17 2000m Steeplechase. Michael has shown great progress in this event which he only took up at the start of the season in the East Munster Schools in April. He has improved with every outing and last weekend he produced his best performance of the year when winning the Silver medal in 6 mins 38.18 secs. In the race Michael along with the eventual winner set a fast pace and they soon opened a gap on the rest of the field. Midway through the race the winner increased the pace but this didn’t deter Michael who was running well especially using good technique at the water jump. Michael maintained his effort all the way to the line to win his first individual All Ireland medal, a just reward for all the hard and enjoyable training over the past six years or so with the Club. This was a brilliant performance and I have no doubt that Michael will enjoy this fantastic achievement. Clare Horgan competed in the Girls under 16 800m. Clare ran well when finishing in 2 mins 39 secs in what was a very competitive race.
Jason Mullins competed in the Boys under 18 Shot Putt and he performed very well. Jason produced a fine array of throws with his Best effort of 12.61m winning the Silver medal. This was a fine performance by Jason who equalled his PB set at this year’s All Ireland Schools Championships.
Reece Maher competed in the Boys under 16 3000m. This was his first time tackling this distance at National level and he will have learned a lot from this experience. In what were very blustery conditions he performed well when finishing in 10 mins 51.24 secs.
Sean Tobin competed in the Boys Under 17 3000m. Here after the initial charge the field soon settled with Sean well positioned on the shoulder of the leaders watching every move. As they approached the 2K mark Sean went into the lead and made every stride a winning one as he extended his lead all the way to the line to win very impressively in 9 mins 14.82 secs.
Tullamore was the venue for the All Ireland Junior Track and Field Championships on Sunday, 27th June. Here we had Jaco Oosthuysen competing in the Javelin. He put in a fine array of throws with his throw of 56.14m winning the event. This was a great victory for Jaco who reversed positions with the All Ireland School’s Champion.
