At the recent All Ireland Juvenile Track and Field Championships held in Tullamore Jason Mullins competed in the Boys under 18 Discus. He performed very well when moving into the Bronze medal position on his 2nd throw when the discus cut landed at 39.15m. he maintained this position under the very last round of throws when he was edged out by 0.21m for the Bronze medal. Still this was a very good Championship for Jason as he won the Silver medal in the Shot Putt earlier in the season.

Tullamore was the venue last weekend for the last days of the All Ireland Juvenile Athletic championships. Clonmel had no fewer than nine athletes in competition an achievement in itself.
On Saturday the track competition started with the 1500 meter races which saw some sterling performances by our middle distance runners. Orlaith Moynihan was first up in the girls under 15, 1500 meters. Orlaith started out conservatively making her move towards the end of the race picking off runners at her ease. Orlaith finished in fifth place in personal best of 5 mins 3 secs.
Sean Tobin was next on the Track in the boys under 17 1500 meter and was eager to follow up his 3000m Irish title with a good performance. Sean was positioned perfectly for the first lap and took up the running stretching the field with a blistering pace that nobody could match. The victory was never in doubt as Sean stretched his lead finishing in 4 mins 7 secs and earning him yet another National championship Gold.
Cliona Doyle was next and performed well in the girls under 18, 1500. Cliona ran mid field throughout and finished strongly in a very competitive race.
After the 1500 meter races it was the turn of the race walkers on the track. Anthony Tobin participated in the boys under 14, 2000 meter walk and had the race of his life. Anthony took up the walking from the gun and had some stiff competition in a very tough field. Anthony and Dylon Mimna from Ballinamore exchanged the lead continuously throughout the race and were locked together at the end. Anthony finished strongly but had to be content with the silver on this day. Anthony walked a personal best time of 10 mins 28 secs.
Evan Lynch was next on the track in the boys under 16, 3000 meter walk and was full of expectations fresh from his Schools International victory the weekend before. Evan led the race from start to finish smashing the existing Irish record of 14 mins 16 secs by a massive 20 seconds when finishing in 13 mins 56 secs. Evan was almost a minute clear at the line of the second place finisher in this perfectly executed race. A feature of these Championships was the tremendous support these athletes got from their fellow Club athletes; indeed it was a full team effort by the athletes, the coaches and the supporters.
On Sunday last the final day of the All Irelands took place at Tullamore. Clonmel had three athletes in competition in the Inter County Relays. In the girls under 13 Relay Phoebe Murphy assisted the Tipperary team to victory and earned herself another national gold medal in what is a year to remember for this fine athlete having won her first national sprint championships just a few weekends back.
Jaco Oosthuysen was also in action. Jaco more noted for his Javelin perfection showed that he is a man of many talents as he participated in the boys under 19 Relay competition for Tipperary. This quartet gave a demonstration of running to win the gold and earn Jaco his second Irish Gold medal in this season.
In the Under 17 Boys Relay Ben Browne ran on the Tipperary Relay team who were just piped into fourth place narrowly missing out in the bronze.
This bring to a conclusion the National championships however both Sean Tobin and Jaco Oosthuysen as a result of their fantastic displays have been selected to represent Ireland in the Celtic games to be held in Athlone on the 7th of August. Just reward for two fantastic athletes.
